Resolution and consistency
1080p is a useful target for many screens, while a suitable 4K edition can show more fine detail on a larger display. Compression, source quality, screen settings and connection stability still affect what you see. An older film can have excellent texture without looking digitally smooth.
When the picture gets soft
Adaptive bitrate players may lower resolution to keep video moving. Allow the connection to settle and check for competing downloads. If buffering continues, choose a lower supported setting temporarily. Repeatedly forcing the highest resolution can turn a minor quality compromise into a stop-start evening.
Keep the intended picture shape
Black bars can be part of the correct aspect ratio. Avoid stretching an older television episode or cropping a wide film just to fill the screen. For text that is too small, change subtitle settings rather than zooming the whole picture.
